A hand-carved and functional piece for your space, a bathroom vanity offers more than an attractive cabinet and sink. Adding character to the piece is the bathroom vanity top. The top portion, made of real or synthetic stone, sits on top of the wooden cabinet and acts as a counter for the user. More compact designs will have a smaller bathroom vanity top, while larger and double sink models have greater surface area.
Excluding the mirror, a bathroom vanity has three parts, regardless of style: a wooden cabinet with a shelf inside, a stone top, and a sink basin made of porcelain. While higher-quality vanities offer some variation for the sink, the bathroom vanity top and cabinet make the design. Some contrast in color; a light marble top may be paired with a darkly-finished cabinet, for example. Others are similar in shade; a rocky-road marble may be on top of wood with a coffee-colored finish.
High-quality vanities, such as those sold at ICA Furniture, often use natural stone for the top. The options for a bathroom vanity top, for example, include granite and marble. A dark appearance consistently characterizes the former, while the latter has some variation. Some marble tops are light in color, and others have a mottled rocky road or patchwork quality.
A synthetic bathroom vanity top, however, takes liberties with these natural shades of stone. A synthetic granite top, for instance, may be highlighted by gold flecks. A synthetic marble top, similarly, may add more contrast to a mottled patina.
While all bathroom vanities are designed with a top, some have more counter space than others. A standard-size 36-inch vanity, for example, will have a top large enough for a sink basin and some smaller items around the edge. Single sink vanities, however, range from 24 to 60 inches wide, and the latter, with a centered basin, has a larger top. Double vanities, similarly, are designed with about the same amount of surface area on top but with sinks at both ends.
